YAKIMA, May 2—Behind the effective twirling of Tiny Ted Savarese and 14 hits, Yakima won its third straight Western International League victory of the season over Vancouver, 12-5, here tonight. It was the first of a four-game series.
The win gaves Yakima a half game margin over Salem which was rained our for the third straight day on its home field.
Although Savarese, a left-hander, gave up 13 hits to the Caps he never was in serious trouble as his teammates got to three Vancouver pitchers for six runs before the Caps scored. Savarese also collected three hits in four trips to the plate, including a three-run triple in the eighth.
Three of the last six Yakima runs were gifts of pitcher Vance Thurston, the Caps' third. He walked in two runs in the seventh and forced in another in the eighth when he hit Dick Briskey with the bases loaded.
